Alterego:
Did Bob say anything about upcoming TPB's for the rest of the year?

Also, for future editions coming out this year, there will be 14 volumes out in 2003. Among the committed editions are Atom #2, All-Star Comics #9, Challengers of the Unknown #1 and Spirit #11. There will be an as yet unannounced Silver Age first volume, and he would not tell me what the extra-sized volume will be.

Wahoo, wahoo, wahoo! Atom #2, and Challs #1 is still on the schedule. Wahoo!

The Silver Age volume #1 intrigues me. I feel the most likely candidate is SA Superman, but I will eagerly anticipate each month's solicitations until we know for sure.

I was also at ICON, sitting next to AlterEgo (I think). To clarify a bit further, there will be 14 DC Archives, plus 3 Spirit, 2 THUNDER Agents, and 1 Elfquest. The breakdown will be 8 Silver and 6 Golden Age. There are more Silver because they sell better. AlterEgo is right when he says that there will be one more Silver #1. Bob also made a cryptic statement that if they can get everything together there would be an interesting Golden Age volume. It did not sound like Superboy.

Also, although he didn't say it, I think Bob is still reading. He knew about the Top Ten reasons that he isn't answering, saying his favorite was that he is writing the intro to the Sugar and Spike Archive. Someone may have sent him that info, but it's also possible he's reading and just not posting.

I don't, but from DC's point of view it makes more sense than any other possibility I can think of.

Silver Age Superman makes the most sense to me, possibly several months after GA Superman #6, but somehow I doubt we will see it this year

Hey, daprof. I was the guy in the wheelchair who was at Bob's panel. That's why I got there late and missed the first few minutes where he talked in detail about the DC Archives. Thanks for listing the news that I missed!

Hi AlterEgo. I was the one sitting next to you. Bob really did not say anything about TPBs that I remember.

One piece of information that I forgot to mention earlier. Bob said that Sgt. Rock was the best selling archive for 2002. When he was asked whether that meant we would see Volume 2, he smiled, said that they were meeting soon to discuss 2004, and that sales always play a major part in the decision making. Obviously no commitment, but I got the impression that Sgt. Rock would receive serious consideration.

Bob also said they were considering a Starman Volume 2 because that would finish that series. He did not say how serious that consideration was.

Good, on both points. even if Starman isn't finished next year, they have it in their minds. A think Rock will have a second volume by '05, and if that goes well too, he'll probably be on a regular schedule. And we might get more #1s from the war genre, to see if there are any other Rocks.

That also bodes well for another test of genres. If a war book can sell, why not a western or SF or horror? Romance and humor are still a little bit off in the future, I imagine. But the others have strong, well-known characters that have potential to do well.

Couple of thoughts here:
1) Rock benefitted from factors that the other genres may not have - a popular continuing character, lotsa Kubert art, and it's a good, accessible gift for non-comic readers (esp. WW2 vets or afficianadoes). Plus look at the news of the past year or so.

2) Does DC have a western character that would be popular enough for this? The only ones I could think of are Jonah Hex and Bat Lash. I just don't think Johnny Thunder and the rest of the 50s/60s characters have as much appeal as those guys. The more recent vintage of Hex would work against him (plus there were some really bad stories in there as well) and someone seems to have something against Bat Lash.

3) There isn't a bankable artist to hitch a western archive series onto (unless you do the S&K romances). Toth, Infantino and others did some nice work, but I don't think as many people are interested in that part of their careers.

But anyway: YAY!! MORE SGT. ROCK!!!

I think Toth, Gil Kane, Infantino, and Kubert are all pretty bankable to the segment of the market that buys archives. Demand is low for this material because a lot of people are unaware of a)its existence, and b) its close resemblance to their later, Silver-Age styles (in the case of Kane and Infantino--I actually think Toth was at his all-time peak in the early '50s).

Often brilliant comic artists of the past are ignored by the comic buying public at large. However, I think Cardy should be added to the list along with the Toths and Kuberts. I believe the ART OF NICK CARDY book did pretty well, so hopefully he would be considered bankable to a certain degree and we can get that Bat Lash archive eventually.

I wonder WHO has something against Bat Lash?

I don't think anyone has anything against Bat Lash--I think they want to do it, adnd I also think it'll be the first Western we see archived.
Reasons:
It's a done-in-one, and thus not an implied commtment.
It's late '60s, and therefore there's probably not a lot of art reconstruction.
Cardy is a popular artist, and Aragones and O'Neil are popular writers.
It's poised midway, both in time and thematically, between the conventional old-fashioned superheroish-style DC westerns of the late '40s-to-early '60s period on the one hand and the spaghetti-gothic Jonah Hex on the other. Success with Bat Lash could mean that either or both of those more extreme types of DC western would fly.

Odd that Bob didn't mention anything about upcoming TPB's? On a related note - did he say anything about a Black Canary or Huntress TPB in the works?

Dnewton, perhaps the reason that Bob didn't mention anything about specific TPBs is that he wasn't asked specifically. I confess my orientation is towards Archives and I didn't ask about TPBs. No one else asked either, as far as I recall. OTOH, I arrived about five minutes late and TPBs might have been discussed before I got there.

Hope this is good information for everyone.

Great News. I wonder when the board is going to change.

Clifford has already been collected by Fantagraphics in their Feiffer series, it's vol.1 I believe. It's most likely still available. Well worth the hunt.

This might seem like a silly question, but with JLA/Avengers, how soon after the initial mini-series is released do you think DC/Marvel will release a collected version?

You should go to the new board. If DC's doing the collected edition, I suspect 6 months. If Marvel's doing it, 5 minutes.
